As another school year comes to a close and students across San Diego prepare for summer break, parents are reflecting on more than just report cards, graduations, and summer plans. Increasingly, families are asking a more fundamental question: What are our children being taught, and who is making those decisions?
Across San Diego, parents are becoming increasingly concerned about the rise of antisemitism in schools and the impact local leaders have on what students learn, how they are protected, and the values being taught in our classrooms.
Across California and throughout the nation, schools have become ground zero in a growing battle over education, civic values, and the alarming rise of antisemitism. While summer traditionally marks a pause from the classroom, this year it should also serve as a call to action.
At the Antisemitism Task Force at StandWithUs San Diego, we are committed to fighting against Jew hatred wherever it arises, especially in our children’s education. It’s up to us, because the future of our schools, and the values they uphold, will be shaped by decisions being made right now.
A New Front Line in the Fight Against Antisemitism
In recent years, incidents of antisemitism in schools and on college campuses have surged. Jewish students have reported harassment, exclusion, intimidation, and the normalization of anti-Jewish rhetoric disguised as social justice activism. What was once confined to fringe voices has increasingly found its way into classrooms, curriculum debates, and school board meetings.
This is not simply a Jewish issue.
When any form of hate is allowed to flourish in educational spaces, all students lose. Schools should be places where young people learn critical thinking, respect, and civic responsibility, not environments where division, misinformation, and discrimination are tolerated.
The decisions made by school boards and elected officials directly impact curriculum standards, educational policies, teacher training, and ultimately, what is being taught to our children.
Why We Need to Protect All Students, Equally
The rise in anti-Jewish incidents has intensified conversations around protecting Jewish students. In our culture, there is an expectation for every other religious or ethnic group to remain protected from harassment, intimidation or discrimination. But all too often, that falls short when it comes to Jewish students.
Students should never feel pressured to hide their identity, remain silent about their beliefs, or fear being targeted because they are Jewish. And the responsibility of protecting these students belongs to all of us: parents, educators, community leaders, and elected officials alike. When schools address antisemitism proactively, they create safer environments for every student.
