StandWithUs Canada Expands with New Legal Department Led by Anita Bromberg

TORONTO, ON (May 12, 2026) – StandWithUs Canada is excited to announce the launch of its new Legal Department, led by Director Anita Bromberg. Bromberg will serve as the organization’s Legal Director, providing in-house expertise on student-related issues while helping to assess, respond to, and address incidents of antisemitism and discrimination in educational settings.

In this role, she will lead the development of a dedicated legal department that serves as a key resource for students facing antisemitic incidents. The department will help students understand their legal options, gather evidence, and assess when legal action may be appropriate. It will also develop educational resources and toolkits for students, parents, and educators on legal rights, complaint processes, and institutional responsibilities, while providing guidance on policy-related issues. Additionally, StandWithUs Canada is working to build partnerships with other legal organizations in this space, as well as a network of lawyers willing to provide pro bono support for students. Lawyers interested in contributing are encouraged to reach out.

Bromberg brings decades of legal experience and a long record of advocacy on behalf of the Jewish community. After beginning her career practicing in the areas of human rights and constitutional law, she founded her own firm, providing litigation and research support.

She later served as legal counsel for B’nai Brith Canada, where she played a key role in establishing a comprehensive system for tracking and responding to hate crimes through their hotline, and in expanding their national database, which formed the basis of the organization’s annual antisemitism audit. She also contributed to several seminal legal cases, from defending the right to display religious symbols in public to holding hate-mongers accountable before the courts.

Bromberg went on to serve as Executive Director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, where she used her position to bring communities together through dialogue and education, while helping advance the implementation of the IHRA definition of antisemitism and contributing to the development of Canada’s national strategy to combat antisemitism.

Since October 7, 2023, she has devoted significant pro bono time to supporting Jewish organizations and students. She also co-founded Lawyers Combatting Antisemitism, a nonprofit that educates legal professionals on addressing antisemitism and antizionism.

“At a time when our country is seeing an alarming surge in antisemitism, our community must fully rededicate itself to confronting this issue,” said Bromberg. “In building this department, we’ve created a clear place for students to turn – somewhere they can talk through what they’ve experienced, better understand their rights, and receive guidance on what steps may be available.”

StandWithUs Canada is building on the model established by its U.S. headquarters, where a robust legal team has already had meaningful impact. Recent examples include settlements in antisemitism cases involving Barnard College (July 2025) and Columbia University (February 2026), both of which resulted in concrete commitments to address antisemitism on campus.

“Launching this department with Anita in this role is a pivotal step in strengthening our ability to support students facing antisemitism on campus,” said Jesse Primerano, Executive Director of StandWithUs Canada. “Students are often unaware of the available options when it comes to defending their rights. This development enables us to provide comprehensive support to students, from education and advocacy to strategy and legal support. This new capacity represents a critical addition to how we’re able to stand behind students.”
