Yet across the country, and even here in San Diego, we continue to see troubling examples of antisemitism appearing in educational spaces. These incidents do not only affect Jewish students; they impact entire school communities and challenge the values of inclusion, respect, and mutual understanding that schools are meant to uphold.
As antisemitism continues to rise nationwide, students, parents, educators, and community members must recognize that confronting hate is a shared responsibility. The burden of addressing antisemitism should never fall solely on Jewish students.
Antisemitism Is Everyone’s Concern
When antisemitic incidents occur, Jewish students are often expected to explain why certain language, imagery, or actions are harmful. But combating hate cannot be the responsibility of those targeted by it alone.
Just as we expect communities to stand together against racism, discrimination, and other forms of bigotry, we must all take an active role in recognizing and addressing antisemitism. Silence can normalize prejudice, while education and action can help prevent it.
Unfortunately, recent incidents in San Diego schools demonstrate why this work remains so important.
Antisemitic Incidents in San Diego Raise Serious Concerns
At Canyon Crest Academy (CCA), a senior quote published in the school’s yearbook included the phrase “From the River to the Sea.” While some individuals may interpret the slogan differently, many Jewish students and organizations view it as a call that denies the Jewish people’s right to self-determination and the existence of the State of Israel. Its appearance in a school publication sparked concern among members of the Jewish community who felt the message created an exclusionary and hostile environment.
Similarly, at Francis Parker School, a Palestinian cultural event reportedly displayed a map of the Middle East with Israel erased from the image. Regardless of intent, the removal of Israel from a map can be perceived as denying the existence of the world’s only Jewish state and can leave Jewish students feeling marginalized and unwelcome.
These incidents underscore an important reality: educational institutions must be thoughtful about how political messaging, symbols, and displays affect students from all backgrounds. Promoting cultural understanding should never come at the expense of excluding or erasing another community’s identity.
The Impact on San Diego Students
For many Jewish students, incidents like these are not isolated events. They occur against a backdrop of increasing antisemitism on college campuses, in K-12 schools, and online.
Students who encounter antisemitic rhetoric, exclusionary messaging, or hostility toward their Jewish identity may feel unsafe speaking openly about who they are. Some report feeling pressure to remain silent in classrooms or avoid participating in discussions related to Israel and Jewish identity.
Every student deserves an educational environment where they can learn without fear of discrimination or intimidation.

The Antisemitism Task Force maintains a reporting system that allows community members to document incidents of antisemitism they experience or witness. These reports help identify patterns, provide support to affected individuals, and inform community leaders about emerging concerns.
If you witness or experience an antisemitic incident, submitting a report helps ensure that it is documented and addressed.
Advocacy and Community Engagement
We work with schools, community leaders, elected officials, and organizations to raise awareness about antisemitism and encourage meaningful responses when incidents occur.
By engaging directly with decision-makers, we help ensure that concerns are heard and that schools have the resources necessary to foster inclusive environments for all students.
Education and Awareness
Education remains one of the most effective tools for combating prejudice. Through educational programs, public awareness efforts, and community outreach, we help people understand what antisemitism looks like today and why it matters.
Many incidents stem from a lack of awareness rather than malicious intent. Providing context, education, and opportunities for dialogue can help prevent misunderstandings from becoming harmful experiences.
