RabbisUnited stands in solidarity with Central Synagogue and New York’s Jewish community following the antisemitic attack during Shabbat services on August 14, 2026.
We call upon Mayor Mamdani to use every available power and resource to protect Jewish New Yorkers, Jewish institutions, and the fundamental right of Jews to worship and live openly and safely. That responsibility must also extend to the words and actions of all those who hold public office.
At a time of alarming antisemitism, elected leaders must recognize that rhetoric has consequences. Language that demonizes, inflames, or contributes to an atmosphere of hostility toward Jews or the Jewish community must have no place in responsible public leadership. Jewish New Yorkers should not have to wonder whether entering a synagogue, wearing a Star of David, a kippah, or otherwise expressing their Jewish identity will make them a target.
We therefore call for more than statements of solidarity. We call for visible leadership, meaningful security measures, vigorous enforcement of the law, unequivocal condemnation of antisemitism from every source, and accountability for those who threaten or attack the Jewish community.
